Overall, I was satisfied with my choices, but I am definitely eager to see what I missed once the recordings will be available online. Studying the agenda in advance is a must and certainly paid off. Whatever you choose, you always feel you are missing out on something cool that everyone talks about. The only (good) problem is that you always have like ten talks running at the same time, and you can choose only one of them.

The talk itself, given by security expert Dino Dai Zovi, was inspiring and combined two of my favorite fields: security and software engineering.īlack Hat is offering quality content by top security researchers. What a cool way to start the summer camp. The only thing missing was Elvis Presley singing about network protocols and assembly code. Wow! Just imagine a huge hall with a big stage and black and dark-blue lighting. Black Hat USA (7-8 Aug)ĭuring the keynote talk, I was wondering whether I am at a security conference or a rock concert. On August 6th, after more than 22 hours of flight and transit (two connections, low budget arrangement - aah!), I reached Sin City. I ordered a shuttle from the airport (highly recommended), updated my OS and AntiVirus, and started to plan my schedule.

I was ready to start packing! I reserved hotel rooms ( Loxur hotel for Black Hat and later The LINQ for DEF CON to stay in walking distance) and added a ticket for DEF CON through the Black Hat registration website to skip the long waiting lines. To cover my flight expenses, I leveraged an excellence research grant I received from the Technion Cyber Research Center.

There are free tickets out there to grab.īlack Hat – checked. I didn't have high hopes, but in June, Black Hat informed me that I was granted a scholarship! Lesson learned: Keep creating your opportunities and apply for scholarships. Flight tickets and the Black Hat registration were simply too expensive. In early 2019, “later” looked more likely. I returned home, knowing that I will come back sooner or later. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay for DEF CON and for the rest of the camp. Needless to say, this was an outstanding experience, especially as this was my first trip to the States. In summer 2018, I had the incredible honor to present at Black Hat USA part of my thesis research about virtual assistants. degree in Software Engineering, and I currently study for a Master's degree in Computer Science. In case you overlooked this in my LinkedIn profile, my name is Yuval Ron, age 22, and I'm a student at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. Because one thing is sure – I certainly will try to be there again. I hope you'll enjoy the article, and that some of you will join me in Las Vegas next summer. Forgive me for providing some basic details, but they might come in handy for the next novice. This being my first summer camp, I wanted to share my experience and the things I learned along the way with you. This year, more than 30,000 hackers and researchers gathered at this tremendous cyber festival, and luckily, I was one of them.
